Ground rules

  1. EDI training first. Only faculty who have completed the Equity and Excellence in Academic Recruitment training may review files, discuss candidates or vote. Track it in the EDI Training tab.
  2. Criteria before Phase 1. At an area meeting before Phase 1 begins, we agree on what makes an outstanding candidate (field, topic, research quality) and how we decide (a vote, a point system). Once set, neither can change.
  3. A diverse shortlist. The shortlist sent to central must include at least one candidate from a marginalized background (gender or ethnicity).
  4. Approval before invitations. The shortlist goes to the Dean and the Vice-Dean (Academic and Faculty Affairs) for approval before invitations go out. Academic Affairs then moves the approved candidates to the Workday reference check.
  5. Watch every talk. Everyone who votes must watch every finalist's presentation, live or recorded, and be present for the vote.
  6. A pool, not a name. The area recommends a pool of candidates to hire, not a single candidate.
  7. Some flyouts may be virtual, depending on where candidates are and how long their visas would take.
From the Dean's Representative and the Academic Affairs Office.
